Walk 4 Health Toddington gets up and running

Written by Mike Fayers on . Posted in Walking 4 Health

A new Walk 4 Health programme in Toddington has already signed up almost 70 walkers in its first 6 months, with 13 different walk routes on offer, thanks to the hard work of its volunteer walk leaders.

BRCC, the coordinator for Walk 4 Health Bedfordshire:   https://www.walkingforhealth.org.uk/walkfinder/walk-4-health-bedfordshire , was approached late in 2016 by a volunteer from the Good Neighbour scheme in Toddington about setting up a health walk programme in the village. By early January posters and leaflets were on display and BRCC was receiving our first enquiries from prospective walk leaders.

During April we trained our first walk leaders who then checked out and risk assessed a number of suitable routes, and the following month saw the launch of the new programme. Six months on the walk leaders have produced an electronic newsletter, which you can read here:

BRCC cheers its volunteers in Central Bedfordshire

We are delighted that groups and volunteers supported by BRCC have been recognised by Central Bedfordshire Council at their third Cheering Volunteering awards, which took place at the Grove Theatre, in Dunstable, on the evening of 6 June.

The annual event is intended to thank the many volunteers and voluntary organisations across Central Bedfordshire for the often unheralded work they do to help others in their community.

Flitton & Greenfield Good Neighbours, part of BRCC’s Good Neighbour schemes Network, won the John Buxton Panel’s Choice Award.

Katie and Brian Juffs (pictured), leaders of our Walking 4 Health group in Arlesey, were Highly Commended under the same award.

Ex-BRCC Board member Michael Grant was a runner-up for the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Walking 4 Health

BRCC co-ordinates a range of Walking4Health walk programmes throughout Central Bedfordshire and Bedford Borough. These individual programmes are led by trained volunteer Health Walk Leaders.

Health walks are regular walks which are free and open to all – though aimed particularly at people who are presently doing little or no exercise – and usually last for about an hour.

People are encouraged to walk at their own pace, safe in the knowledge that they are walking with trained leaders, one of whom will remain at the back of the group, with the slowest walkers.

At the end of the walk we encourage walkers to socialise – therefore many of our walks end where people can have a drink and a chat.

One walker, who was referred to Walking4Health after suffering a stroke, told us: “I can’t praise Walking4Health enough, it was important to my recovery. The involvement has helped so many of our members, after health problems, bereavement and loneliness. It’s fun and the social aspect is so important…walking keeps you healthy.”
