Green Infrastructure

Green Infrastructure (GI) is the network of multi-functional green spaces required to meet a community’s needs. It consists of both public and private land, with and without public access, in urban and rural locations. BRCC works to develop and maintain GI across Bedfordshire, in close collaboration with local communities and volunteers.

BRCC can work with individual parishes to generate their own ‘Green Infrastructure’ (GI) Action Plans for protecting and enhancing their local countryside. The workshops are open to all members of the local community, and the resulting Action Plans inform district and county level plans, as well as being made available to planners and developers to inform them of what local communities value and require in terms of future GI provision.

In recent years we have helped parishes to produce GI Plans as part of Neighbourhood Plans, such as Caddington and Northill.

Completed plans include a wide range of aspirations, such as:

  • A bench and information board at a good viewpoint
  • Restoring village ponds
  • Planting a community orchard or woodland
  • Linking an existing dead-end footpath to the rights of way network
  • Creating a new cycleway
  • Converting large arable fields to flower–rich chalk grassland
