Caddington Good Neighbours cheer up Christmas

Good Neighbour Schemes (GNS) have been busy during the Covid pandemic and as part of Random Acts of Kindness week, we’re going to throw the spotlight on some of the work that has been happening across Bedfordshire.

Caddington Care GNS have organised a local response group named Caddington Cobra, who have been shopping, collecting prescriptions and calling people who might feel isolated. They have also stepped up to provide transportation to the vaccination centre in Dunstable for those requiring urgent medical assistance.

The support they have provided has been vital and very well received, but they also went over and above at the end of last year, providing a special treat for Christmas.

Because Caddington Care GNS haven’t been able to run any of their usual social events or exercise classes, they decided to send their clients a little gift bundle, containing an individual Christmas cake and pudding, a Terry’s chocolate orange, Ritz crackers and a net of cheeses. These lovely little packages also included a jar of jam and a jar of pickle, supplied by the Aley Green Methodist Chapel, who make jams and pickles every year to raise funds for the chapel and various charities.

On the weekend of Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 December, 11 volunteer households wrapped the items in cellophane, tied with a bright ribbon, and added a festive label wishing the recipient a Merry Christmas and a Safe New Year. By Sunday evening, they had all been delivered thanks to a tremendous effort of all those involved.

The recipients were totally surprised by the gifts and the feedback was very positive. A spokesperson for Caddington Care GNS said “The recipients were totally surprised by the gifts as we have never done anything like this before and the feedback has been amazing. We are still getting thank you letters, cards and phone calls.

“The whole operation was well worth the effort. But we so hope that in 2021 we will be able to have our usual trips, social events, and Christmas gatherings.”

Caddington Care GNS were able to fund the lovely Christmas surprise thanks to a generous bequest from a client. The family of the donor were kept informed throughout.
