It is ten years since Houghton Regis Helpers (HRH), one of our first urban good neighbour groups, began helping residents with befriending, transport, and other neighbourly support.
In December 2011 there were 22 volunteers – and six residents leapt at the chance to ring up and ask for help.
Fast forward to 2021 and there are now over 50 volunteers and more than 700 residents have received help over the ten years.
HRH have decided to delay celebrating the milestone event until the spring when it’s hoped it’ll be easier and warmer for volunteers, ‘clients’ and other special guests to all get together – and they are all really looking forward it.
BedsRCC’s Mike Fayers couldn’t wait that long – he is marking this auspicious day with a slice of cake from the Barn at Cardington, and what better way to launch the celebrations!
Mike presented Anne White, HRH’s Treasurer, with their start up grant back on 1 December 2011 and he has enjoyed working with the group ever since. From these pictures, he hardly looks a day older – which can be put down to never missing an opportunity for cake!
To add to the birthday celebrations, from 1 December 2021 to 31 January 2022 HRH has been chosen as one of Asda’s three ‘Green Token’ good causes eligible for a share of £900 – which would really help replenish the group’s funds after all the lockdowns. The Token scheme is now on-line so if you’d like to vote and use your token to boost their chances, you can visit www.asda.com/green-tokens and select ‘Dunstable.’ You can vote once a week.
