World Suicide Prevention Day – Changing the Narrative on Suicide

Today is World Suicide Prevention Day, which aims to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and encourage well-informed action about preventing suicide. We can all play a role in preventing suicides.

Suicide is a serious public health issue, with there being over 700,000 deaths from suicide each year around the world. A recent study found that less than half of people feel comfortable talking to those they’re close to about suicidal thoughts, compared to 74% who said they feel comfortable talking about their mental health.

World Suicide Prevention Day is an opportunity to raise awareness about mental health, take steps towards preventing suicide, and support those those who may be struggling. For 2024-26, the theme of World Suicide Prevention Day is “Changing the narrative on suicide”:

This theme aims to raise awareness about the importance of reducing stigma and encouraging open conversations to prevent suicides. Changing the narrative on suicide is about transforming how we perceive this complex issue and shifting from a culture of silence and stigma to one of openness, understanding, and support.
