Beds RCC have been making energy improvements to Dunstable Community Halls
After taking on Dunstable Community Halls in 2023, we are now undertaking work to improve the energy efficiency of the buildings. This has been made possible after receiving funding from Central Bedfordshire Council and Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities.
Constructed with lightweight timber similar to a garden shed, the halls have struggled with poor insulation, single-paned windows, and outdated heating systems. The wooden construction had permitted many draughts throughout, as the building heated up or cooled down, and heating the rooms required constant monitoring by staff if on site.
Many upgrades have been undertaken on the halls to improve the energy efficiency, including replacing the old electric panel heaters with three Mitsubishi heated/air con units in the main hall and three smaller ones in the meeting rooms. The other top hall has just had three units fitted, all of which are individually controllable and very efficient as an air-to-air heat pump system. Draughts were remedied by replacing the wooden frames and fitting double glazing and gaps round doors were sealed and foam sealant used to increase wall cavity insulation.
The improvements should reduce the electric and oil consumption costs by some £8,000 per year. This helps to keep the hall on a sustainable footing, whilst reducing the reliance on non-renewable kerosene oil and so contributing to a lower carbon footprint. Wi-Fi-enabled remote control streamlined energy management, reducing staff onsite attendance time.
The impact of these upgrades extended far beyond energy efficiency. User feedback was resoundingly positive, and controlling energy costs and hire charges helped keep groups sustainable.
The hall has held a Wellbeing CafƩ session every week since November 2022, where adults can gather in a safe environment, obtain support if required and receive lunchtime refreshment. Attendees are very appreciative of a warm and welcoming atmosphere and the sessions continue to thrive.
Costs savings and some funding have allowed the space surrounding the halls to be converted into a Community Garden. Wellbeing cafƩ attendees and volunteers have planted raised beds throughout the season. This green space provides a lovely environment to pursue mental and physical wellbeing when using the halls.
