Tracy Cowan Steps Down as CEO of Beds RCC After Transformative Seven-Year Tenure

After nearly seven years at the helm of Bedfordshire Rural Communities Charity (Beds RCC), Tracy Cowan has stepped down as Chief Executive Officer, leaving behind a legacy of resilience, innovation and heartfelt leadership.

Tracy’s departure was marked earlier this week with a farewell gathering at Ridgmont Station, where colleagues, trustees and volunteers came together to celebrate her contributions. The event was filled with gratitude as speakers reflected on her leadership through some of the most challenging times in recent memory.

“She led us through the pandemic with clarity and compassion,” Paula Grayson, Chair of Trustees recalled. “While other charities struggled, we thrived because of the foresight and adaptability Tracy and her senior management team brought to the table.”

Under Tracy’s leadership, Beds RCC not only weathered the storm of COVID-19 but emerged stronger, expanding its reach and deepening its impact across Bedfordshire. From organising remote work logistics almost overnight to ensuring staff and volunteers remained connected and motivated, Tracy’s tenure was marked by decisive action and a deep sense of care.

“You never let anything slip,” said Paula, “and your empowering leadership helped grow a magnificent team around you.”

Tracy’s influence extended beyond internal operations. Her passion for community engagement and rural wellbeing helped Beds RCC become a beacon of support for those isolated during the pandemic. Initiatives like social prescribing and volunteer gardening projects flourished under her guidance, reconnecting people with nature and each other.

In her farewell remarks, Tracy was characteristically humble. “You can only lead a team if they want to be led,” she said. “It’s never a one-person journey.”

She leaves to take on a new role with the Bedford College Group, her new colleagues are already benefiting from her strategic insight and community-first mindset.

As a parting gift, Tracy received a personalised Christmas jumper – an affectionate nod to her festive spirit – and a gift card to spend as she chooses. “One of the only comments I got when I announced I was leaving was, ‘Who’s going to do the Christmas jumpers now?’” she joked.

Incoming CEO Cliff Andrews was warmly endorsed by Tracy herself, who expressed full confidence in his ability to carry the torch forward.

Though she’s moving on, Tracy promised she wouldn’t be a stranger. “I’ve already told the girls – I’ll be bringing my new team for sandwiches at Ridgmont.”
