Thanks to funding from the Harpur Trust, Beds RCC’s GNS team is working with our Borough Good Neighbour Groups to help some of the residents they assist to be more equipped for the approaching colder weather.
Wilstead and Wixams Good Neighbour volunteer Richard Oxlade collected 65 ‘Warm in Winter’ gift bags from the charity Small Acts of Kindness. The bags are filled with fun and useful items (including a directory of local info and contacts) to help vulnerable people over the age of 55 this winter. These will be given out by local Good Neighbour groups to add a bit of extra warmth and cheer.
After delivering the bags to Beds RCC’s Cardington office, Richard was presented with a ‘Champion Driver’ certificate. He was nominated by fellow volunteers at Wilstead and Wixams Good Neighbours Scheme who thoroughly appreciate his enthusiasm, commitment and the many lifts he has given local residents over the years – he can truly be said to go that extra mile.
Richard said: “I enjoy driving and if I can help someone out at the same time I see no reason not to.”
Thanks also go to Richard’s employer Mitie, who enabled Richard use his work’s van for the journey and to fill it with ‘Warm in Winter’ bags. The company is pleased to support its employees to give back to the community through volunteering.
If you’d be interested in becoming a volunteer driver – for example, helping people go shopping, attend medical appointments or visit loved-ones in care homes – there are 44 local Good Neighbour groups in both Bedford Borough and Central Beds that would love you to join them.

Beds RCC’s Social Prescribers and Community Agents will also be distributing ‘Warm in Winter’ gift bags this winter and the bags can also be requested direct from Small Acts of Kindness.
